Water Birth 101

Water birth is essentially giving birth in a warm tub of water with support from your midwife. This allows to reduce pain during labor, lower blood pressure and heart rate for both mother and baby, helps prevent postpartum hemorrhage, eases breastfeeding, improves bonding between mother and newborn, reduces risk of infection--and that's just the beginning!

What to Expect During a Water Birth

Water birth is a natural experience that can be very beneficial for both you and your baby as it allows you to relax in the comfort of warm water. This relaxing effect helps the mother push more easily during the second stage of labor.

Benefits of Water Births

  • Less pain during labor. When you're in the water, your body is supported and relaxed. This can help you breathe more deeply, which helps reduce pain.

  • More comfortable birthing environment. You may find that you feel more at ease and relaxed when giving birth in a pool of warm water than in a bed with no support under your body at all.

  • Fewer medical interventions during birth--and after! Some studies have shown that babies born via water birth are less likely to require resuscitation after delivery than those born outside of it!

Risks of Water Births

While water births are generally considered safe, there are some risks associated with them.

  • Risk of infections. Infections can occur due to bacteria present in the water supply, or if you have an open wound that gets infected during labor.

  • Umbilical cord issues. If your baby's umbilical cord is wrapped around his/her neck or has other abnormalities, these may be more likely to cause problems in the water due to increased pressure.

  • Position anomalies. In complications related specifically to delivery position (like shoulder dystocia or breech baby), your doctor will recommend avoiding water births altogether for the possible need for immediate medical attention.

Post-Water Birth Care

After you have given birth, you will be cared for by a midwife or doctor. They will make sure that both of you are healthy. After the birth, it is important to breastfeed as soon as possible for bonding with your baby!
